Trip to Indonesia 2019, Part 8

2019 Apr 30 - Bali

Visit to a family-business restaurant. The cook uses condiments known to his family and ancestors only.

With the food I ordered a turmeric drink.

The bottle mouth fractured when opening the cap.

Visiting friends' home.

On our way to the Pantai Matahari Terbit ("Sunrise beach" ?) at the east side of Denpasar.

Pantai Matahari Terbit. As Balinese beaches have to comply to both Hinduistic and Muslim modesty, people must swim and bathe with their clothes on. Swimsuit, even a long one, does not count as "clothes".

Balinese say that dogs are the way to Heaven. That may explain the large number of dogs roaming the streets. The dogs are generally friendly and walk one to three at a time, not in bloodthirsty packs.

On the Muslim Java island dogs are very rare compared to Bali.

The toll road inside Denpasar, providing a shortcut across the gulf.

This temple complex houses no less than 5 holy places of 5 different creeds, built wall to wall, as to show that peaceful coexistence is possible.

Whether it is a coincidence or an extra safety measure, the 6th building in the area is a police station.

The creeds in order of display are Hinduism, Protestant Chistianity, Buddhism, Roman Catholic Christianity, Islam. The sixth officially registrable religion is Confucianism, but it does not have a temple here, either lacking the need for it, or because the complex predates the granting of official status of Confucianism.

Pandawa beach is located on the Peninsula Island, a land extrusion at the south side of Denpasar, connected to the main island with a relatively narrow strip of land.

As I said for Pantai Matahari Terbit, I repeat here: As Balinese beaches have to comply to both Hinduistic and Muslim modesty, people must swim and bathe with their clothes on. Swimsuit, even a long one, does not count as "clothes".

Limestone is a popular and durable building material at this area for both temples and houses. The land is dry and hard to utilize for living. The beach was nearly inaccessible until the limestone excavation began and the road to the beach was built. Since that time utilizing the land has also become easier.

The President Joko Widodo, also called Jokowi, has decided to update Indonesia's infrastructure especially fir electricity and bring tye and also bring the network technology to the era of light fibers.

Accordingly there were many roads dug open, resulting in labyrinthine driving routes and hair-raising passages at narrow points.

Entrance to Uluwatu temple area. A parking place may be tricky to find.

The rules and the historic background of the Uluwatu temple area. Man or woman, short or long trousers, no matter: you put the cloth on or stay out of the area.

Uluwatu temple area. Waiting for the sunset.

THIS VISIT COST US TWO PAIRS OF EYEGLASSES. The monkeys decided that we will not leave the area with our glasses and launched a cleverly planned attack on us. A big monkey approached Sri from behind, jumped on her, stayed on her a few leisurely seconds as if to catch our full attention, and took then Sri's glasses. When I was busy trying to get them back, another monkey, quick as a lightning and barely touching me when flashing by, took my glasses.

Sri got her glasses back with the help of the temple area staff, although soiled and twisted out of shape. My glasses are still in the monkeys' possession and remain so.

I favour single-focus lenses and have therefore three pairs of glasses with me. The loss to me was thereby not a great one. Sri, on the other hand, was dependent on her highly tailored multifocals.

We let an optician to fix the glass frames today.

If you have no time to read all the rules at the ticket booth, photograph them and step aside to read them from your photo - with good attention to what they say.

One of the three hotel guards in action.

1st May is a labourer's holiday in Indonesia. Some of the shops are closed.

Glasses fixed by an optician free of charge!

Eyesight, a precious sense.

The optician provides also information about how UV radiation is filtered before reaching the retina.

Snack break.

Snack break continues as a light lunch.

The portions are not huge, but so aren't their prices, either.

A midtown street.

Elephant wheelie.

Erlangga is a large warehouse specializing in souvenirs and local-culture products.

Foreign visitors are grouped and each group labelled with an identification number.

Each group member shall take to his right hand the mark of the... erm... shop owner. Or to the left hand, or to the shirt. The glue holds badly on the skin in the tropical climate.

Animal carvings at Erlangga warehouse.

Many of the products have been branded to the house.

Erlangga warehouse driveway.

The metallophones have nearly pentatonic, obviously gamelan-related scale. The bars ring in two different registers depending on the strike, and they have resonator tubes.

The home of the shop owner next to the shop.

Not for the left-handed.
