Trip to Indonesia 2019, Part 2

2019 Apr 14-16 - Kelet, Indonesia

On our way to the Penghibur orphanage we met a memorable truckload on the road. The sacks contain raw materials for cattle fodder.

Late in the evening we arrived at the orphanage, to stay two nights in its guest premises. The orphanage is the lifelong mission of its hostess Anna-Liisa "Mami" Jaanu and her late husband Suprapto. In spite of the name "orphanage" the children living in it are typically not orphans, but children whose maintenance is much too expensive for their poor parents. Many of the children have special needs.

Mami's chance to retire and return to Finland is far overdue, and finding a follower to take the orphanage management is already becoming an emergency. The local Catholic Church has offered to take up the duty, and the arduous process of the changeover is now in progress.

The vision of the orphanage is to help the less fortunate children.

The mission of the orphanage is to help the children develop personality, dedication, and self-confidence, to teach and train them for independent life, and to support the government's efforts in rearing new citizens.

Work order lists and reminders of discipline tell the children to clean trashes, keep things in their places, turn off faucets and lamps, and follow the work directions.

The orphanage is also a small farm. The animals are kept to increase the orphanage's self-sustenance, as the available money resources are very scarce.
